Các tác giả kiểm tra cách điều trị và nhận thức của xã hội về bệnh tâm thần thông qua các yếu tố kỳ thị, phân biệt đối xử và sự loại trừ xã hội, cùng với quyền con người. Chúng tôi lập luận rằng việc được chẩn đoán mắc bệnh tâm thần ở một quốc gia đang phát triển có ảnh hưởng đáng kể đến gần như mọi lĩnh vực trong cuộc sống của một người. Những thách thức mà cá nhân mắc bệnh tâm thần phải đối mặt tại Ghana là do văn hóa và các thực tiễn xã hội hiện hành có xu hướng kỳ thị, phân biệt, và loại trừ những cá nhân này khỏi cuộc sống bình thường. Sự thiếu hụt về nguồn lực và ý chí chính trị tiếp tục làm trầm trọng thêm vấn đề này. Bài báo khẳng định tầm quan trọng của việc chấp nhận đào tạo và thay đổi thái độ, nhận thức, cũng như nguồn vốn cho các dịch vụ nhằm giải quyết các vấn đề liên quan đến bệnh tâm thần.
