Manuel Castells, in Estructura de Classes y Politica Urbana en America Latina, studied the class composition of squatter settlements in Santiago, Chile, in 1968–1969 and found that, despite the prevailing idea of ‘marginality’, squatter settlements were not concentrations of lumpen proletariat, but that 63% of squatters were proletarian workers.
