AbstractSodium metatungstate, Na6[H2W12O40] is presented as a new medium for density‐gradient centrifugation. This electrolyte may be used in aqueous, aqueous sodium chloride, or in methanol solutions. The sedimentation behaviour of sodium metatungstate in binary (Na6[H2W12O40]/H2O) and in ternary (Na6[H2W12O40]/NaCl/H2O) systems is presented and discussed. Practical examples are presented from macromolecular chemistry (Sedipur), biochemistry (DNA), and mineralogy (sodium‐aluminium mica).
