Dầu mỏ là nguồn năng lượng thiết yếu và quan trọng liên quan đến an ninh năng lượng và chiến lược quốc gia. Dựa trên một mô hình cân bằng tổng thể động lực có thể tính toán theo đệ quy, nghiên cứu này xem xét những tác động tiềm tàng đến các chỉ số kinh tế - xã hội chính ở Trung Quốc, bao gồm tăng trưởng kinh tế, mức giá, việc làm, phúc lợi hộ gia đình và hoạt động sản xuất, dưới các kịch bản thiếu hụt dầu nhập khẩu khác nhau. Kết quả cho thấy thiếu hụt dầu có tác động tiêu cực đến tăng trưởng kinh tế của Trung Quốc; nếu tất cả các khoản tăng thu từ việc tăng giá dầu trong nước được chuyển giao cho ngân sách nhà nước để bù đắp tổn thất đầu tư, các tác động tiêu cực đối với GDP sẽ chủ yếu xuất phát từ tác động tiêu cực đến tổng tiêu dùng; sự giảm sút thu nhập từ lao động đóng vai trò rõ ràng hơn trong việc giảm tổng tiêu dùng so với tác động của việc tăng chỉ số giá tiêu dùng (CPI). Tác động tiêu cực lên các hộ gia đình nông thôn lớn hơn so với các hộ gia đình thành phố. Lợi nhuận của hầu hết các lĩnh vực sản xuất, và xuất khẩu của hầu hết các lĩnh vực cũng sẽ bị ảnh hưởng tiêu cực.
