Trong bài viết này, chúng tôi dựa trên các lý thuyết trong tâm lý học và kinh tế học và liên kết sở thích vị trí với sự nhận diện của các tác nhân tư nhân đối với một nhóm xã hội, cùng với các chuẩn mực xã hội hiện diện trong nhóm đó. Mục tiêu của bài viết là phân tích các tác động hành vi, phúc lợi và chính sách của mối liên hệ giữa danh tính xã hội của các tác nhân tư nhân và một hoạt động giải trí có rủi ro. Kết quả của chúng tôi cho thấy rằng, khi kết quả của hoạt động vị trí là không chắc chắn, kết quả tiêu thụ quá mức thường liên quan đến sở thích vị trí trong khung xác định không nhất thiết phải áp dụng cho tất cả các tác nhân trong một trạng thái cân bằng xã hội. Lý do là các tác nhân có động cơ hành động thận trọng nhằm tránh thất bại khi kết quả của hoạt động xã hội được đánh giá là không chắc chắn. Chúng tôi cũng chỉ ra cách chính sách có thể được sử dụng để nâng cao phúc lợi trong một nhóm xã hội mà trong đó hoạt động giải trí có rủi ro mang tính vị trí.
