Phân tích hồi quy chỉ ra rằng nam giới dị tính đánh giá sự nhạy cảm với mùi khi chọn bạn tình nhiều hơn so với nam giới đồng tính. Ngược lại, nam giới đồng tính lại đánh giá âm thanh của giọng nói của bạn tình cao hơn so với nam giới dị tính. Nam giới và nữ giới dị tính không khác nhau theo giới tính về giá trị của khứu giác; cả nam và nữ đều đánh giá cao các khía cạnh về khứu giác của một bạn tình tiềm năng. Giá trị cao hơn của các tín hiệu khứu giác đối với các cá nhân dị tính hỗ trợ cho ý tưởng rằng khứu giác trong việc chọn bạn tình có thể hoạt động như một tín hiệu về khả năng sinh sản, và chỉ ra rằng thông tin khứu giác không có giá trị cao đối với nam giới đồng tính trong việc chọn lựa bạn tình. Những phát hiện này gợi ý rằng nhiều người dường như đang tìm kiếm những thuộc tính tương tự khi tìm kiếm một bạn tình tiềm năng, và rằng khứu giác là một khía cạnh quan trọng trong quá trình này.
