Selectivity in fossil preservation as shown by a comparison of fossil and modern barnacle populations

Volume distribution curves were used to compare a modern (Balanus eburneus) and a fossil (Balanus concavus) barnacle population. The curve for the fossil population shows the selectivity of fossil processes, evidenced by a deficiency of smaller (young) membergs.
