Mẫu của tảo nâu Ecklonia cava Kjellman từ độ sâu khoảng 5 m trong vùng ngầm của Vịnh Nabeta, Shimoda, được sử dụng để nghiên cứu quang hợp liên quan đến cường độ ánh sáng, nhiệt độ, tuổi tác và mùa. Quang hợp và hô hấp được đo bằng máy đo khối lượng khí với các đĩa (4,1 cm2) của lá tảo. Cường độ ánh sáng bão hòa của quang hợp ở 20°C hoặc ở các nhiệt độ tại chỗ thường xảy ra chủ yếu ở khoảng 10 klux. Gần như không quan sát thấy sự ức chế quang hợp trong phạm vi cường độ ánh sáng lên tới 30 klux. Nhiệt độ tối ưu cho quang hợp khoảng 25°C trong suốt cả năm, hơi cao hơn vào mùa hè và thấp hơn vào mùa đông. Tỷ lệ quang hợp ròng bão hòa ánh sáng ở 20°C của các lá tảo trưởng thành bắt đầu tăng vào cuối mùa thu, đạt đỉnh (48 μl O2 cm−2 hr−1, 16 μl O2 mg (d.w.)−1 hr−1, 2,3 μl O2 μg (chl.a)−1 hr−1) vào mùa đông, và giảm về mức tối thiểu (30 μl O2 cm−2 hr−1, 5,0 μl O2 mg(d.w.)−1 hr−1, 1,0 μl O2 μg(chl.a)−1 hr−1) vào mùa hè hoặc đầu mùa thu. Các lá tảo non cho thấy sự thay đổi theo mùa gần như tương tự trong tỷ lệ quang hợp. Tỷ lệ quang hợp của phần gốc thấp hơn đáng kể so với phần ngọn của một lá tảo. Tỷ lệ hô hấp của lá tảo trưởng thành tăng gần như tuyến tính với nhiệt độ trong phạm vi 5–30°C. Không quan sát thấy sự thay đổi đáng kể trong tỷ lệ hô hấp ở 20°C trong suốt cả năm.
