Sinh sản ở động vật biển từ lâu đã được công nhận một cách mơ hồ rằng có một mức độ phụ thuộc vào nhiệt độ biển. Quan điểm này được thể hiện rõ ràng trong đóng góp giá trị cuối cùng của Lo Bianco cho việc hiểu biết về các kỳ sinh sản của hầu hết sinh vật trong Vịnh Naples. Trong phần Giới thiệu của công trình này, Lo Bianco (1, tr. 531) đã cung cấp bảng số liệu quan sát nhiệt độ trong nhiều năm, nhưng không cố gắng liên kết chúng với các kỳ sinh sản đã quan sát. Trong tài liệu có một số quan sát cho thấy việc sinh sản ở một số loài động vật phụ thuộc vào nhiệt độ cụ thể, đáng chú ý là bởi Schmidt (2); nhưng chưa có nỗ lực nào, theo như tôi biết, để chỉ ra một cách tổng quát mối liên hệ giữa sinh sản và nhiệt độ ở động vật biển. Tuy nhiên, từ các tác phẩm của Appellöf, rõ ràng rằng nhà tự nhiên học này đã dự đoán trong tâm trí mình một số kết quả đạt được từ các quan sát thực nghiệm được mô tả ngắn gọn trong các trang sau và các suy luận từ đó. Người ta tin rằng các quan sát thực nghiệm này đã cung cấp một manh mối cho thấy cách thức mà sinh sản có thể liên quan đến nhiệt độ ở một số lượng lớn động vật biển, nhưng do sự không đầy đủ của các hồ sơ sinh sản và các quan sát về điều kiện vật lý trong biển, chỉ có một khảo sát ngắn gọn được thực hiện ở đây, và một cuộc thảo luận đầy đủ về hiện tượng sẽ được dành cho công trình sau. Trong các trang tiếp theo, quá trình sinh sản của trứng chín, hoặc khả năng thụ tinh của trứng với sự phát triển sau đó, được coi là tiêu chí của sinh sản.
