Việc chẩn đoán kịp thời rối loạn nuốt là rất quan trọng đối với những người khuyết tật trí tuệ. Việc sàng lọc định kỳ cho từng cá nhân bởi các nhà trị liệu ngôn ngữ rất khó khả thi do nguồn lực hạn chế. Do đó, việc tiền chọn các cá nhân có nguy cơ rối loạn nuốt cao hơn thông qua việc sàng lọc bởi người chăm sóc là rất cần thiết. Nghiên cứu này nhằm phát triển công cụ Sàng lọc Rối loạn Nuốt mới cho người khuyết tật trí tuệ (SD-ID). SD-ID đã được phát triển, xác thực và tối ưu hóa qua hai vòng. Phiên bản 3, gồm chín yếu tố nguy cơ và 20 mục liên quan đến hành vi ăn/uống, đã được nghiên cứu kỹ lưỡng về tính khả thi, tính hợp lệ đồng thời và độ tin cậy, sau đó đã được tối ưu hóa. SD-ID (phiên bản 3) được hoàn thành trong trung bình bốn phút (tính khả thi). Một mối liên hệ tích cực mạnh mẽ đã được tìm thấy giữa điểm số trên SD-ID và Khảo sát Rối loạn Nuốt (tính hợp lệ đồng thời). Độ tin cậy kiểm tra lặp lại và độ tin cậy giữa các người đánh giá là rất tốt. Hai yếu tố nguy cơ bổ sung đã được thêm vào và hai mục đã được loại bỏ để đưa ra phiên bản cuối cùng 4.
