Dựa trên những hiểu biết từ các nghiên cứu đề cập đến những khía cạnh cụ thể của việc hình thành ý nghĩa và trải nghiệm về địa điểm trong các sự kiện chạy bộ, bài báo này nhằm áp dụng một cái nhìn tổng thể hơn về cách mà ý nghĩa gắn bó với địa điểm và trải nghiệm của những người chạy bộ địa phương được hình thành thông qua nhận thức cá nhân và tập thể. Về mặt khái niệm, bài báo kết hợp các phương pháp tiếp cận hiện tượng học (hậu) và tương tác biểu tượng. Về mặt thực nghiệm, bài báo tập trung vào thành phố Rotterdam của Hà Lan và sử dụng dữ liệu từ nghiên cứu thực địa phong phú được thực hiện tại sự kiện NN Marathon Rotterdam năm 2018, cũng như hai sự kiện chạy bộ quy mô nhỏ không thương mại do một câu lạc bộ chạy bộ địa phương tổ chức vào năm 2017. Dựa trên nghiên cứu định tính này, bài báo cho thấy rằng sự hiểu biết của các vận động viên chạy bộ địa phương về môi trường vật lý và xã hội luôn gắn liền và hòa quyện trong những ý nghĩa xã hội rộng lớn hơn và những trải nghiệm chung được chia sẻ. Đồng thời, bài báo cũng phản ánh về các thách thức phương pháp nghiên cứu đối với các sự kiện chạy bộ và kêu gọi sự công nhận rõ ràng hơn về tính đa dạng của các thế giới chạy bộ đang được nghiên cứu, cũng như về những đánh đổi giữa các kỹ thuật nghiên cứu khác nhau được áp dụng.
