Một tỷ lệ lớn bệnh nhân mắc bệnh coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) phát triển suy hô hấp nghiêm trọng. Mặc dù cơ chế bệnh sinh chính xác của viêm phổi COVID-19 nghiêm trọng vẫn chưa được biết rõ và các đặc điểm của những bệnh nhân này thường không đồng nhất, nhưng tình trạng suy hô hấp cấp tính thường đáp ứng các tiêu chí của hội chứng suy hô hấp cấp (ARDS) và các đặc điểm lâm sàng cũng nhất quán với những gì đã biết trước đây về ARDS.
