Mô hình ngưỡng stress (Wolpert, 1965; Brown và Moore, 1970) giả thiết rằng con người không xem xét việc di chuyển trừ khi họ trải qua sự căng thẳng cư trú. Bài viết này phát triển một mô hình tương tự về di chuyển cư trú trong đó sự hài lòng về nơi ở đóng vai trò là một biến trung gian giữa các biến cá nhân và biến cư trú cùng với di chuyển. Mô hình được kiểm tra bằng dữ liệu từ một nghiên cứu theo dõi các cư dân Rhode Island. Kết quả cho thấy rằng sự hài lòng về nơi ở trong cuộc phỏng vấn đầu tiên liên quan đến mong muốn di chuyển và đến di chuyển trong năm tiếp theo sau cuộc phỏng vấn.
