Vượt ra ngoài việc nghiên cứu các mạng xã hội hoặc sinh thái riêng lẻ, nghiên cứu về các hệ thống xã hội - sinh thái (SES) đã mở đường cho khoa học bền vững phân tích các mạng xã hội và sinh thái một cách tích hợp. Tuy nhiên, thực tế của các hệ thống SES không chỉ là các hệ thống con phân cấp gắn liền với xã hội loài người và những nhu cầu dựa trên tài nguyên sinh thái của họ.
