Leishmaniasis là một tập hợp các hội chứng phức tạp và đa dạng, với các biểu hiện lâm sàng khác nhau, do các loài khác nhau thuộc chi Leishmania spp. gây ra và có thể được đặc trưng bởi ít nhất bốn hội chứng: Leishmaniasis nội tạng (VL, còn được gọi là kala-azar), Leishmaniasis da sau kala-azar (PKDL), Leishmaniasis da (CL), và Leishmaniasis niêm mạc (MCL). Trong số các hình thức lâm sàng nghiêm trọng nhất, VL nổi bật, gây ra cái chết của khoảng 59.000 người hàng năm. Việc chẩn đoán nhanh chóng và chính xác trong VL là cần thiết để giảm tỷ lệ mắc bệnh và tỷ lệ tử vong.
