Sắt kim loại (Fe0) đã được sử dụng ngày càng nhiều để loại bỏ các chất độc hại khỏi nước trong suốt ba thập kỷ qua. Tuy nhiên, quan điểm cho rằng sắt kim loại (Fe0) không phải là tác nhân khử môi trường đã bị bác bỏ một cách mạnh mẽ. Các nhà nghiên cứu trình bày kết quả của họ trong một tạp chí khoa học phải chấp nhận gánh nặng chứng minh rằng lập luận của họ có giá trị. Cuộc thảo luận kéo dài 30 năm này trong cộng đồng xử lý Fe0 là điều xa lạ đối với các nhà hóa học điện, vì đây là kiến thức đã có từ thế kỷ trước. Tuy nhiên, tài liệu đã được đánh giá đồng nghiệp về "xử lý sử dụng Fe0" có vẻ bị chi phối bởi các đánh giá viên nghĩ rằng Fe0 là một tác nhân khử.
