Railway noise-its effects on sleep, mood, subjective sleep quality, and performance
Tóm tắt
This study tested the assumption that rail noise impaires sleep, subjective sleep quality, and performance. Thirty-two participants (16 women, 16 men, 19–28 years) slept from 23.00 to 07.00 hours during 4 consecutive nights of 3 consecutive weeks in the laboratory. Eight participants slept in quiet during all nights. Twenty-four participants were exposed to rail noise. Three groups of eight participants each experienced this condition in the 1 st, 2nd, and 3rd week, respectively. During the 4 nights, a pink noise (32 dBA) or rail noise with equivalent noise levels of 40, 44, or 50 dBA was randomly applied. The polysomnogram was recorded continuously throughout all nights. Sleep quality was evaluated after awakening, and performance tests to assess executive functions were completed in the evenings and in the mornings. Physiological sleep variables revealed an all-or-none response where sleep was almost equally impaired by all noise levels. Subjective evaluation revealed that sleep quality decreased equally at noise levels of 40 and 44 dBA and more strongly at 50 dBA. Performance was not associated with noise levels but with the amount of slow, wave sleep. The results suggest an admissible limit between LAcq=32 and 40 dBA. Performance was probably not affected by nocturnal noise exposure, but was significantly related to show wave sleep, indicating that the executive functions are degraded even after minor sleep disturbances.
