Viêm khớp dạng thấp (RA) là một bệnh viêm mãn tính đặc trưng bởi sự xâm nhập của các tế bào màng hoạt dịch vào sụn và xương, thể hiện một số đặc điểm của các tế bào đã chuyển hóa. Để kiểm tra xem việc trì hoãn con đường sửa chữa DNA do tổn thương oxy hóa có phải là một cơ chế có thể liên quan đến các kiểu hình thay đổi của những tế bào này hay không, chúng tôi đã phân tích các SNP của protein sửa chữa cắt cơ sở (BER), gen hỗ trợ sửa chữa bằng tia X 1 (XRCC1) trong số bệnh nhân RA. DNA gen được chiết tách từ tế bào máu của 40 bệnh nhân RA và các SNP của ba nhiễm sắc thể trong vùng mã hóa của XRCC1 (codon 194, 280 và 399) được xác định bằng phương pháp PCR, tiếp theo là giải trình tự. Trong ba biến thể, chỉ có biến thể XRCC1 Arg280His liên quan đến nguy cơ gia tăng RA (tỷ lệ odds 13; khoảng tin cậy 95% 1.1–147) sau khi điều chỉnh cho yếu tố hút thuốc. Dữ liệu này cung cấp bằng chứng lần đầu tiên rằng BER, mà liên quan đến việc phục hồi từ tổn thương oxy hóa, có thể tương quan với RA.
