Confinement of the polymer inside the interlayers results in a decrease in the conformational entropy of the polymer chains. However, this entropic penalty of polymer confinement may be compensated in part by the increased conformational freedom of the tethered surfactant chains that are located in a less confined environment as the layers separate.22-24
