Bài báo này mô tả những phát hiện từ một nghiên cứu gần đây về mức độ phơi nhiễm hydrocarbon thơm đa vòng (PAH) trong số cư dân thành phố Dhaka, Bangladesh. Chúng tôi đã đo lường các adduct PAH-DNA trong tế bào bạch cầu (WBC) như một dấu hiệu của sự phơi nhiễm PAH từ môi trường và nghề nghiệp ở 46 lái xe xích lô (những người đạp ba bánh không có bảo vệ để vận chuyển hành khách) và 48 lái xe không phải xích lô (nhóm so sánh) tại thành phố Dhaka. Chúng tôi đã thực hiện xét nghiệm miễn dịch gắn enzym (ELISA) để định lượng một cách miễn dịch các adduct PAH-DNA trong WBC. Mức độ adduct PAH-DNA ở các lái xe xích lô cao hơn đáng kể so với nhóm lái xe không phải xích lô. Trong số các lái xe xích lô, mức độ adduct có xu hướng liên quan tích cực với thời gian cư trú trong thành phố và việc hút thuốc lá. Không có xu hướng tương tự nào được quan sát thấy ở các lái xe không phải xích lô. Kết luận, các kết quả cho thấy rằng cư dân đô thị có phơi nhiễm công việc với ô nhiễm giao thông tại Dhaka có nguy cơ cao hơn về các tác động sức khỏe từ sự phơi nhiễm với các hợp chất PAH gây ung thư.
