Political psychiatry: The New York City homeless mentally ill initiative

The author illustrates the concept of political psychiatry by describing a recent New York City policy to involuntarily remove from the streets and hospitalize mentally ill homeless people. Mental health professionals' interactions with the executive, judicial and bureaucratic branches of government, as well as with interest groups and the news media are described. The author emphasizes the need for mental health professionals to effectively interact with the political process in order to influence government policies that constantly shape the delivery of psychiatric. care.
