Periostin, như một dấu hiệu sinh học mới nổi, tham gia vào nhiều bước trong quá trình chuyển hóa xương. Nghiên cứu này nhằm điều tra mối tương quan giữa mức độ periostin và mật độ khoáng xương cũng như các dấu hiệu chuyển hóa xương ở phụ nữ sau mãn kinh mắc tiểu đường type 2 (T2DM). Nghiên cứu này là một nghiên cứu cắt ngang bao gồm 164 phụ nữ sau mãn kinh mắc T2DM, và 32 phụ nữ sau mãn kinh không mắc tiểu đường có mật độ khoáng xương bình thường (BMD) được chọn làm đối chứng khỏe mạnh. Tổng cộng, 164 đối tượng mắc T2DM được chia thành ba nhóm theo BMD: nhóm BMD bình thường (n = 29), nhóm loãng xương mức độ nhẹ (n = 70), và nhóm loãng xương (n = 65). Dữ liệu lâm sàng của tất cả các đối tượng cùng với các thông số sinh hóa liên quan đã được thu thập. Mức độ periostin huyết tương được phát hiện bằng phương pháp thử miễn dịch enzyme liên kết (ELISA). Mức độ periostin huyết tương tăng đáng kể ở bệnh nhân T2DM có BMD bình thường so với các đối chứng khỏe mạnh (p < 0.05). Trong nhóm bệnh nhân tiểu đường, mức độ periostin huyết tương tăng đáng kể kèm theo giảm BMD, có mối tương quan dương với mức osteocalcin (r = 0.162, p = 0.039) và có mối quan hệ nghịch với BMD cổ xương đùi (r = −0.308, p < 0.001) và BMD toàn bộ xương đùi (r = −0.295, p < 0.001). Trong trường hợp có các biến chứng mãn tính, mức độ periostin chỉ tăng nhẹ ở những cá nhân mắc biến chứng của bệnh võng mạc tiểu đường, bệnh thận tiểu đường và gãy xương (p > 0.05). Nghiên cứu hiện tại chứng minh rằng mức độ periostin huyết tương có liên quan đáng kể đến BMD ở bệnh nhân mắc T2DM, và periostin có thể hoạt động như một dấu hiệu sinh hóa mới cho loãng xương ở phụ nữ sau mãn kinh mắc tiểu đường type 2.
