Thay vì sử dụng các tiêu chí mô tả thông thường để đánh giá u não tĩnh mạch, các phương pháp đo diện tích đã được thử nghiệm. Kết quả cho thấy diện tích bề mặt dưới động mạch não trước (động mạch quanh dây corpus callosum) được đo trong hình ảnh chụp mạch máu ngang tăng tỷ lệ thuận với thể tích của khoang ngoài. Một mức độ tương thích cao đã được chỉ ra giữa các phát hiện lâm sàng và thần kinh mô tả với các giá trị có thể đo được bằng phương pháp planimetry.
