Cấu trúc môi trường sống (HS) tương ứng với sự hiện diện của các cấu trúc vật lý trong một hệ thống và là một trong những đặc điểm sinh thái quan trọng nhất ảnh hưởng đến các mô hình và quy trình của các cộng đồng sinh học. Trong nghiên cứu này, việc sử dụng độ phức tạp và tính không đồng nhất trong các nghiên cứu thực nghiệm biển trong bối cảnh của HS đã được điều tra. Các ấn phẩm thực nghiệm thảo luận về vai trò của cấu trúc vật lý trên các cộng đồng biển đã được khảo sát, và việc sử dụng các thuật ngữ khác nhau liên quan đến HS đã được phân tích và phân loại thành: (i) độ phức tạp; (ii) tính không đồng nhất; (iii) cả hai như là đồng nghĩa; và (iv) cả hai như là không đồng nghĩa. Phân tích nhóm cho thấy các mô hình sử dụng khác nhau trên các môi trường sống khác nhau. Một sự làm rõ khái niệm, thông qua các nghiên cứu trình bày các định nghĩa, đã được thực hiện và một sơ đồ khái niệm đã được xây dựng xem xét hai ứng dụng: (i) các biện pháp đa chiều hoặc đơn chiều; và (ii) các biện pháp định lượng, định tính hoặc định lượng-định tính. Không có sự đồng thuận trong việc sử dụng và áp dụng các thuật ngữ liên quan đến HS trong các môi trường biển khác nhau, và các phân tích được thực hiện ở đây cho thấy rằng (i) độ phức tạp tương ứng với một phép đo đa chiều với các phần tương tác và (ii) tính không đồng nhất là một chiều của độ phức tạp môi trường sống. Nghiên cứu hiện tại đã cung cấp nền tảng cho sự giao tiếp chặt chẽ hơn trong các lĩnh vực sinh thái khác nhau và đóng góp vào các tổng quát vững chắc trong tương lai liên quan đến HS.
