Dược lý quang học là một lĩnh vực dựa trên việc tạo ra các hợp chất hóa học có khả năng điều khiển chức năng của các phân tử sinh học bằng cách sử dụng ánh sáng. Các hợp chất quang biến đổi có khả năng kích hoạt hoặc ức chế hoạt động của các protein tế bào chính, đặc biệt là các kênh ion, tùy thuộc vào bước sóng của ánh sáng, là những công cụ mạnh mẽ cho việc kiểm soát không xâm lấn các mạng lưới thần kinh và do đó, kiểm soát các cơ quan và hành vi của động vật. Các chất quang biến đổi có thể được chia thành hai lớp chính: (a) các ligand quang biến đổi tan được và (b) các hợp chất liên kết cộng hóa trị với các protein mục tiêu, hay các ligand quang biến đổi gắn cố định. Các chất chặn kênh kali, các chất điều chỉnh thụ thể glutamate và GABA, và các kênh TRP cation đã được tạo ra trên cơ sở này. Dược lý quang học mở ra tiềm năng trong việc kiểm soát cơn đau, khôi phục độ nhạy quang học của võng mạc và điều chỉnh các chức năng sinh lý khác. Tổng quan ngắn gọn này sẽ giới thiệu về các nguyên tắc chính trong việc tổ chức và hoạt động của các công tắc điều khiển bằng ánh sáng, cùng với mô tả về các hợp chất hóa học quang biến đổi có khả năng điều chỉnh hoạt động của các kênh ion điều chỉnh theo điện áp, đồng thời trình bày các nghiên cứu sơ bộ về việc tạo ra các hợp chất dược lý quang học cho mục đích điều trị.
