Ung thư biểu mô tế bào vẩy ở đầu và cổ tái phát có phản ứng kém với hóa trị liệu ở hầu hết các bệnh nhân; do đó, việc phát triển các phương pháp mới là điều cần thiết. Edatrexate là một loại thuốc chống folate mới có hoạt tính kháng u được cải thiện trong các nghiên cứu tiền lâm sàng so với methotrexate. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là xác định tính khả thi và hiệu quả của việc kết hợp edatrexate với một loại thuốc đơn tác dụng khác, carboplatin trong bệnh tái phát mà chưa điều trị hóa trị.
