Cựu chiến binh chuyển giới và người có đa dạng giới (TGD) có tỷ lệ tự tử và tử vong cao hơn so với cựu chiến binh cisgender. Phẫu thuật khẳng định giới tính (GAS) đã cho thấy có tác động tích cực đến sức khỏe tâm thần của các cựu chiến binh TGD. Năm 2021, Cơ quan Y tế Cựu chiến binh (VHA) đã công bố việc khởi xướng quy trình lập quy để bảo hiểm GAS cho các bệnh nhân TGD.
