Các quan hệ đối tác nghiên cứu hợp tác là cần thiết để trả lời các câu hỏi then chốt trong sức khỏe tâm thần toàn cầu, để chia sẻ chuyên môn, tiếp cận nguồn tài trợ và ảnh hưởng đến chính sách. Tuy nhiên, các quan hệ đối tác giữa các quốc gia có thu nhập thấp và trung bình (LMIC) và các quốc gia có thu nhập cao thường không công bằng, với việc cung cấp kiến thức kỹ thuật chảy một chiều từ các quốc gia thu nhập cao tới các quốc gia thu nhập thấp hơn.
