PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe a line of research for developing “online learning/research systems”.Design/methodology/approachTo illustrate this approach, the paper describes a research project that pools the knowledge of 100 experts working online to forecast breakthroughs in all fields of technology.FindingsThe paper finds that online learning/research systems offer great advantages for pooling the tacit knowledge residing throughout organizations.Research limitations/implicationsFormal research studies could be used to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks quantitatively.Practical implicationsMost organizations do not have access to their members' knowledge, so online learning systems would be helpful in making informed forecasts, evaluating strategies, and reaching decisions.Originality/valueThe paper provides a powerful innovation for improving knowledge.
