Các đặc điểm đặc trưng về hình thái và sinh học của hai loài cá đâm nhọn—Pungitius sinensis và P. pungitius—sống tại Hồ nước lợ Bol’shoe (Đảo Bol’shoi Shantar) đã được nghiên cứu. Sự khác biệt về số lượng gai lưng, đốt sống và màu sắc, cũng như sự vắng mặt của các mẫu vật có kiểu hình trung gian cho thấy sự cách ly sinh sản giữa hai loài, được hỗ trợ bởi sự tách biệt về thời gian của các kỳ sinh sản. Loài P. pungitius đã được phát hiện ở Hồ Bol’shoe lần đầu tiên.
