Virus adenovirus đã được phát hiện ở nhiều loài chim khác nhau, và ở một số loài, chúng đã được chứng minh là gây bệnh và làm tăng tỷ lệ tử vong. Trong nỗ lực điều tra các virus liên quan đến chim hải âu thường (Sterna hirundo), một loại virus adenovirus mới đã được xác định trong mẫu phân từ hai con chim hải âu thường trên đảo Gull, hồ Ontario, Canada. Chuỗi gen hoàn chỉnh mã hóa của virus adenovirus mới này có độ dài 31.094 bp, chứa 28 gen khả năng mã hóa, và đây là virus adenovirus đầu tiên được liên kết với chim hải âu. Virus đã được xác định trong 2 trong số 13 mẫu phân từ chim con hải âu, và nó được cho là có liên quan nhất đến virus adenovirus ở vịt 1, với enzyme DNA polymerase có độ đồng nhất chuỗi axit amin 58%.
