Tuyển tập đặc biệt này của Tạp chí Nghiên cứu Người Mỹ gốc Phi là một bộ sưu tập liên ngành các tài liệu nghiên cứu gốc, nhằm bối cảnh hóa kinh nghiệm của các cô gái và phụ nữ da đen từ góc nhìn của nữ quyền da đen. Đặt Tên và Đòi lại cố gắng đạt được một số mục tiêu: (1) thảo luận và phê bình khái niệm giao thoa và sự phức tạp trong bản sắc của các cô gái và phụ nữ da đen; (2) áp dụng một cách tiếp cận dựa trên sức mạnh để khám phá những tài sản, sự kiên cường, sự kháng cự và quyền tự quyết của việc trở thành cô gái và phụ nữ da đen; và (3) rút ra từ các nghiên cứu liên ngành phản ánh các quan điểm lịch sử, xã hội học, tâm lý học và pháp lý trong Nghiên cứu Người Mỹ gốc Phi. Phần đầu tiên của tuyển tập đặc biệt bao gồm ba bài viết khám phá các đại diện của các cô gái và phụ nữ da đen cũng như cách mà họ nội tâm hóa và kháng cự các đại diện này. Phần thứ hai dựa vào nghiên cứu khoa học xã hội để xem xét những cách mà phụ nữ da đen đối phó với sự áp bức chủng tộc và giới tính hàng ngày.
