Sự phát triển ngày càng tăng của công nghệ Internet trên thế giới đã tạo ra những cơ hội rộng lớn cho việc tải xuống bất hợp pháp và ăn cắp bản quyền âm nhạc. Mục đích của nghiên cứu là để khảo sát ảnh hưởng của các quy tắc xã hội và đạo đức, rủi ro cá nhân cảm nhận được về thiệt hại, và kiến thức của người tiêu dùng về chia sẻ tệp đối với nạn phá hoại bản quyền kỹ thuật số trong các nền kinh tế hậu Xô Viết. Mẫu nghiên cứu bao gồm 226 người tham gia từ Nga, Kazakhstan và Kyrgyzstan được sử dụng nhằm xem xét các yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến ý định ăn cắp âm nhạc kỹ thuật số. Nghiên cứu cho thấy rằng sự chấp nhận xã hội rộng rãi đối với nạn ăn cắp bản quyền kỹ thuật số tại các quốc gia hậu Xô Viết cùng với kiến thức của người tiêu dùng về chia sẻ tệp góp phần làm tăng cao nạn ăn cắp nhạc, trong khi rủi ro về thiệt hại cá nhân không có ý nghĩa đáng kể.
