Tài nguyên nước nông nghiệp đã bị giới hạn trong những năm qua do biến đổi khí hậu và lượng mưa không đều ở các vùng khô hạn và bán khô hạn. Để giảm thiểu căng thẳng về nước trong nông nghiệp, việc phủ đất có ảnh hưởng quan trọng như một kỹ thuật tiết kiệm nước trong canh tác cây trồng dựa vào mưa. Kỹ thuật này đặc biệt quan trọng trong việc bảo tồn độ ẩm cho đất, điều chỉnh nhiệt độ đất và hạn chế sự bốc hơi nước từ đất, điều này ảnh hưởng tới năng suất cây trồng. Phủ đất có nhiều tác động chiến lược đến hệ sinh thái đất, sự phát triển của cây trồng và khí hậu. Việc phủ đất cách nhiệt cho đất, giúp cung cấp một lớp đệm chống lại nhiệt độ lạnh và nóng, điều này có ý nghĩa quan trọng trong việc tạo ra những cảnh quan đẹp và được bảo vệ. Nghiên cứu này đã tổng hợp một loạt thông tin về các loại vật liệu phủ đất hữu cơ và nhựa, cũng như tính ứng dụng của chúng trong canh tác cây trồng. Hơn nữa, tiềm năng nghiên cứu trong tương lai về phương pháp phủ đất với mô hình đã được thảo luận nhằm định lượng lượng nước mất mát trong nông nghiệp.
