Sự nhiễm virus thiếu hụt miễn dịch ở người loại 1 (HIV-1) thường dẫn đến các rối loạn nhận thức thần kinh liên quan đến HIV (HAND) trước khi tiến triển thành hội chứng suy giảm miễn dịch mắc phải (AIDS). Ở cấp độ tế bào, các kinase hoạt hóa bởi mitogen (MAPK) cung cấp một họ các chất truyền tín hiệu điều chỉnh nhiều quá trình phản ứng với các kích thích từ môi trường bên ngoài và stress môi trường, chẳng hạn như nhiễm virus.
