Ma trận mesangial của cầu thận chuột đã được nghiên cứu bằng kính hiển vi điện tử truyền qua trong các tiêu bản được bảo quản bằng một kỹ thuật biến đổi, kỹ thuật này tránh sử dụng osmium tetroxide mà thay vào đó sử dụng acid tannic như một tác nhân tương phản. Có thể chứng minh rằng các vi sợi là một thành phần chính của ma trận mesangial cầu thận bình thường. Chúng là các cấu trúc ống không phân nhánh với trung tâm rỗng, chiều dài không xác định và độ dày khoảng 15 nm. Các vi sợi tạo thành một mạng lưới sợi dày đặc kết nối các tế bào mesangial và màng đáy cầu thận.
