MicroRNA (miRNA) là những phân tử RNA nhỏ không mã hóa tự nhiên, gồm từ 21–24 nucleotide (nts), có chức năng điều chỉnh các gen mục tiêu ở mức độ sau phiên mã trong thực vật và động vật. Ở thực vật, miRNA điều chỉnh tiêu cực các mRNA mục tiêu chứa chuỗi bổ sung cao bằng cách cắt mRNA hoặc ức chế dịch mã. MiRNA được xử lý từ các tiền chất đơn chuỗi chứa cấu trúc thân - vòng bởi một enzyme giống Dicer và được tải vào các phức hợp ức chế, nơi chúng tác động lên các mRNA mục tiêu. Mặc dù miRNA thực vật lần đầu tiên được báo cáo ở Arabidopsis sau 10 năm so với miRNA động vật, nhưng hàng loạt miRNA đã được xác định từ nhiều loại thực vật trên cạn khác nhau, từ địa y đến thực vật có hoa, và vai trò của chúng trong nhiều khía cạnh của quá trình phát triển ở thực vật đã được xác định.
