Tóm tắt

Micron-resolution particle image velocimetry (μ -PIV) is used to measure the motion of nominally 1-μm dia. polystyrene particles suspended in a water/sugar solution in a microdevice. Particle motion is induced by an applied electric field through dielectrophoretic (DEP) forces and through viscous interactions with the fluid. The motion of the fluid is governed by electrothermal forces arising from temperature-induced gradients in the electrical properties of the fluid near the electrodes and through the viscous interaction with the particles. Comparisons between finite element calculations and experimental micro-PIV results confirm quantitatively that electrothermal forces play a major role in the motion of the particles. Two different size particles are used for the micro-PIV measurements to determine fluid velocity uniquely.
