It is unfortunate that the recently discovered phases which have noncrystalline local orders (five-fold or ten-fold rotational symmetry which persists over hundreds of Angstroms), have been dubbed ‘quasi-crystals’. The related term ‘guasicrystalline’ has long been used to describe the nearly crystalline local order inferred to exist in many amorphous alloys. Its use goes back to Gaskell.[6] In order to avoid confusion, we will refer to the first phase as guasicry stalline glasses or as described by the quasicrystalline model. The latter, metastable, non-crystalline, non-glassy phases, will be called ‘quasi-crystals’ or icosahedral phases.
