Lysosome là những bào quan có tính acid chứa các enzym thuỷ phân, tham gia vào quá trình phân huỷ nội bào của các đại phân tử. Sự hư hỏng của các bào quan này thường dẫn đến sự thấm màng lysosome (LMP) và sự giải phóng nội dung lysosome hòa tan vào tế bào chất, bao gồm các enzym phân giải protein thuộc họ cathepsin. Điều này, đến lượt nó, kích hoạt một số chuỗi tín hiệu nội bào thúc đẩy một loại chết tế bào có điều hòa, gọi là chết tế bào phụ thuộc lysosome (LDCD). LDCD có thể bị ức chế bằng cách chặn hoạt động của cathepsin bằng dược lý hoặc di truyền, hoặc bằng cách bảo vệ màng lysosome, từ đó ổn định bào quan này.
