Hầu hết các bài đánh giá hiện tại tập trung vào chứng cứ về mối liên hệ giữa các phàn nàn về cổ và/hoặc vai với các yếu tố vật lý tại nơi làm việc được thu thập từ các nghiên cứu cắt ngang. So với điều đó, bài đánh giá này tóm tắt các chứng cứ hiện có từ các nghiên cứu theo chiều dọc. Một nghiên cứu tài liệu hệ thống đã được tiến hành trong Medline và EMBASE (1975–2009), và tất cả các nghiên cứu đã được rà soát bởi ít nhất hai nhà nghiên cứu theo các tiêu chí lựa chọn nghiêm ngặt. Các cấp độ chứng cứ được phân loại dựa trên số lượng nghiên cứu báo cáo các phát hiện tương tự và theo chất lượng phương pháp của các nghiên cứu được bao gồm. Ngoài ra, các nghiên cứu được bao gồm đã xác nhận kiến thức hiện có về mối liên hệ giữa các yếu tố vật lý tại nơi làm việc và các phàn nàn về cổ và/hoặc vai.
