Tái tạo gan sau khi cắt bỏ một phần gan là một hiện tượng rất phức tạp và được phối hợp một cách nhịp nhàng. Quá trình này diễn ra với sự tham gia của tất cả các loại tế bào gan trưởng thành. Nó liên quan đến các cascade tín hiệu bao gồm các yếu tố tăng trưởng, cytokine, tái cấu trúc ma trận, và một số cơ chế phản hồi kích thích và ức chế các tín hiệu liên quan đến sự tăng trưởng. Gan có khả năng phục hồi bất kỳ khối lượng nào đã mất và điều chỉnh kích thước của nó tương ứng với cơ thể, trong khi vẫn cung cấp hỗ trợ đầy đủ cho sự cân bằng nội môi của cơ thể trong suốt quá trình tái tạo. Trong các trường hợp khi các tế bào gan hoặc tế bào đường mật bị chặn đứng khả năng tái tạo, những loại tế bào này có thể hoạt động như các tế bào gốc thuận nghịch cho nhau. J. Cell.
