Rừng nhiệt đới đang nhanh chóng biến mất do sự mở rộng của các cây trồng thương mại nhằm đáp ứng nhu cầu từ các thị trường xa. Những mối quan ngại cấp bách về tác động của việc mất rừng do thương mại toàn cầu các hàng hóa nhiệt đới đã dẫn đến việc chính phủ của một số quốc gia có thu nhập cao xem xét nhiều công cụ quy định và thương mại khác nhau để giải quyết vấn đề này.
