I cambiamenti che si verificano durante l’invecchiamento sono stati spesso attribuiti anche alla mancanza di uno o più ormoni. Occorre distinguere tra le modifiche del sistema ormonale connesse all’età e quelle successive a malattie che sono più frequenti nell’età avanzata. Con l’esclusione della funzione tiroidea, trattata da un’altra relazione su questo volume, l’unico sistema endocrino per cui sono chiare le modifiche con l’età è rappresentato da sistema ipotalo-ipofisi-gonadi nelle donne. In realtà, anche il sistema degli ormoni della crescita (GH-IGF-1), ipofisi-gonadi nel maschio e il sistema ipofisi-surrene relativo alla produzione di deidroepiandrosterone solfato declinano lentamente ma progressivamente con l’avanzare dell’età. Nuovi e interessanti studi sono in corso sulla regolazione nutrizionale dell’anziano, riguardanti il metabolismo glucidico e ormoni come la leptina e l’adiponectina, che potranno definire meglio l’andamento di questi ormoni in età avanzata e le conseguenze cliniche di queste modificazioni.
