In Turkey, various Dense-Graded and Stone Mastic asphalt concrete mixtures are recommended by Turkish Highway Technical Specifications for use in different layers in flexible pavements. Although the minimum performance of asphalt mixtures, such as Marshall Stability, is specified by Highway Technical Specifications, which asphalt mixture results in higher pavement performance is not well known. In other hands, results of researches indicate a huge difference between the performance of laboratory samples and the pavement performance, so it is necessary to evaluate the effect of asphalt concrete mixtures on pavement performance. Therefore, to acquire a rigorous understanding of the impact of AC mixture types and their positions in layers on pavement defects, seven different flexible pavement structures were investigated using AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design for the local conditions of Izmir. Results manifested that mixture types and their positions in layers have profound effects on pavement performance. Also, results indicated that using stone mastic asphalt mixtures in the upper layers and having dense graded asphalt mixture in the lowest asphalt concrete layer results in higher rutting and longitudinal performance but poor alligator cracking resistance in pavements. Furthermore, it was found that using stone mastic asphalt mixtures in the lowest layer ended in an extraordinary improvement of 90.85% in alligator cracking resistance in pavements.
