Die thoraxchirurgische Intensivmedizin ist hochspezialisiert und verlangt vom Thoraxchirurgen profunde Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten zusätzlich zu intensivmedizinischem Standardwissen. Erfahrung mit ausgedehnten Resektionsverfahren und rekonstruktiver Thoraxchirurgie muss genauso vorhanden sein wie bronchologisch interventionelle Fähigkeiten und ein differenziertes Drainagemanagement. In Kooperation mit der Thoraxanästhesie und der Pneumologie übernimmt der thoraxchirurgische Intensivmediziner die zentrale Stellung. Die Rolle des thoraxchirurgischen Intensivmediziner wird in diesem Beitrag detailliert beschrieben und mit Beispielen erläutert. Die zentrale Rolle in der thoraxchirurgischen Intensivmedizin begründet auch den Anspruch auf eine gute intensivmedizinische Weiterbildung.
