Nhiều trường đại học Mỹ gần đây đã thành lập các trung tâm nghiên cứu tương tác với các công ty công nghiệp. Các trung tâm này được chính phủ liên bang hỗ trợ với mục tiêu nâng cao đổi mới công nghệ. Đối với nghiên cứu này, các cuộc phỏng vấn đã được tiến hành với những người liên lạc từ các công ty thành viên để xác định cách mà các công ty thu thập và sử dụng thông tin từ trung tâm cũng như lý do họ duy trì mối quan hệ với trung tâm.
