Ảnh hưởng của các nguồn độ mặn tự nhiên và hoạt động của con người đến độ mặn của sông Shapour trong giai đoạn giảm lưu lượng nước gần đây

Sông Shapour, với diện tích lưu vực là 4254 km2, là một hệ thống sông lớn ở miền Nam Iran. Trong khi lưu lượng nước ở thượng nguồn (sông Shapour thượng nguồn) là nước ngọt, nó trở nên cực kỳ mặn ở vị trí hợp lưu hạ lưu của nhánh Shekastian và suối mặn Boushigan gần đó. Sau đó, sông chảy qua đồng bằng Khesht và cuối cùng đổ vào đập chứa nước Raeisali-Delvari, được đưa vào hoạt động vào năm 2009. Trong giai đoạn 2006–2019, lượng mưa giảm và việc sử dụng quá mức các nguồn nước ngọt đã dẫn đến sự giảm lưu lượng nước khoảng 72% ở sông Shapour. Do không sử dụng nước mặn cho tưới tiêu, nước uống và mục đích công nghiệp, tỷ lệ nước thải mặn từ nhánh Shekastian và suối Boushigan so với nước thải ngọt từ sông Shapour thượng nguồn đã tăng khoảng 3 lần; do đó, biên độ dao động độ mặn của sông tại cửa vào đồng bằng Khesht đã tăng vọt từ 2.1–4.0 dS m−1 lên 3.7–26.0 dS m−1. Điều này đã gây ra thiệt hại kinh tế lớn cho ngành nông nghiệp ở giữa sông Shapour. Về quy mô theo mùa, các quá trình tích lũy muối liên tiếp trong mùa tưới của các vườn cây ăn trái trên đồng bằng Khesht và sau đó là thoát muối trong mùa mưa đã điều chỉnh biên độ dao động độ mặn từ 3.7–26.0 dS m−1 tại cửa vào đồng bằng xuống 5.2–8.9 dS m−1 tại cửa ra đồng bằng. Tại hạ lưu sông Shapour, việc lưu trữ/pha trộn dòng nước ngọt/mặn tại hồ chứa Raeisali-Delvari đã điều chỉnh biên độ dao động độ mặn mạnh từ 0.9–10.7 dS m−1 tại cửa vào hồ đến 3.6–5.5 dS m−1 tại cửa ra hồ. Sự thành công của hồ chứa Raeisali-Delvari trong việc điều chỉnh độ mặn là nhờ vào vị trí thích hợp của nó trên sông Shapour, nằm ở hạ lưu của tất cả các nhánh chính của sông với các nguồn nước tự nhiên mặn/ngọt.
