Nghiên cứu này mô hình hóa việc lây truyền virus coronavirus mới giữa các thành phố và trong cộng đồng tại Trung Quốc từ ngày 19 tháng 1 đến ngày 29 tháng 2 năm 2020. Chúng tôi khảo sát vai trò của các yếu tố trung gian kinh tế - xã hội khác nhau, bao gồm các biện pháp y tế công cộng khuyến khích giãn cách xã hội trong các cộng đồng địa phương. Các đặc điểm thời tiết trong 2 tuần trước đó được sử dụng như là các biến công cụ cho suy diễn nguyên nhân. Các biện pháp cách ly nghiêm ngặt, phong tỏa thành phố, và các biện pháp y tế công cộng địa phương được thực hiện vào cuối tháng 1 đã làm giảm đáng kể tỷ lệ lây truyền virus. Lưu lượng dân số từ khu vực xảy ra bùng phát có nguy cơ cao hơn đối với các khu vực đích so với các yếu tố khác, bao gồm sự gần gũi về địa lý và tương đồng trong điều kiện kinh tế. Chúng tôi định lượng tác động của các biện pháp y tế công cộng khác nhau trong việc giảm số ca nhiễm thông qua các phân tích phản thực nghiệm. Hơn 1,4 triệu ca nhiễm và 56.000 ca tử vong có thể đã được ngăn chặn nhờ vào các biện pháp y tế công cộng quốc gia và tỉnh đã được thực hiện vào cuối tháng 1 tại Trung Quốc.
