L’imagerie en coupes (échographie, IRM) et ses progrès avec les sondes et les antennes endocavitaires ont amélioré de façon considérable l’analyse précise de la paroi urétrale et des tissus péri-urétraux qui échappaient aux explorations radiologiques conventionnelles (urétrocystographie mictionnelle) et à l’endoscopie, limitées à la lumière urétrale. L’échographie endocavitaire, qui est parfois le prélude de l’IRM, permet la visualisation directe des lésions péri-urétrales (diverticules de l’urètre et autres lésions kystiques péri-urétrales, tumeurs solides, matériel chirurgical) tandis que l’imagerie de l’urètre lors de la miction (sténoses et fistules) reste l’apanage de l’urétrocystographie mictionnelle. Les nouvelles méthodes d’imagerie morphologique permettent actuellement une cartographie des lésions de l’urètre féminin dont bénéficie la chirurgie.
